Some Must-Have Retail Items for Senior Pooches

By , About.com Guide

Like people, companion animals are living longer than ever. That’s why it’s a wise idea for retailers to carry products for senior pets, especially older dogs.

I asked Arnie Costell, owner of Watson’s Senior Pet Supplies in Marina Del Rey, Calif., for his recommendations.

1. Doggie Diapers

As dogs age, they sometimes become incontinent. That’s where a product such as Mr. Peepers™ Wrap comes in handy. These leak-free diapers for male dogs are one example. These wrap around the dog’s tummy and up over the back with a Velcro closure that prevents urine from ruining furniture, carpets and bedding. Diapers also are available in other disposable and washable models for male and female dogs of all sizes. (Some are also available in fashion colors, to reduce doggie embarrassment!)

2. Footwear for the Older Dog

Like many older people, some older dogs require special footwear to protect their more sensitive tootsies. Plus, senior pooches – especially those who are disabled - require greater traction to help them avoid slipping and falling on slick surfaces. These All-Terrain Dogs Shoes are made of light-weight, water-repellent Neoprene, and will enable old dogs to feel like pups again.

3. Older Dog Dental Products

Being mindful of one’s pet’s dental health is important throughout an animal’s entire life. Extra care should be taken with an older dog, as they are more prone to periodontal and other dental issues that often come with age. In addition to taking a senior dog to a vet for regular dental and general health checkups, dog parents can help to maintain their pets’ dental health with the use of special senior pet home dental care products, such as cleaning with soft bristle brushes and pet tooth paste.

4. Older Dog Mobility Aids

Costell came up with the idea for the Bottoms Up leash when his own senior sheepdog/Labrador mix, Watson, developed mobility issues. This is a harness that supports a dog’s backside, while enabling pooches to go to the bathroom unencumbered. For dogs that need extra help in getting around, wheelchairs are also available. Here are some tips about how to choose the right one.

5. Pet Steps and Ramps

As older dogs have a harder time climbing and jumping, pet steps such as these UltraLite Pet Stairs afford even very small dogs easier access to beds and their favorite furniture. These portable stairs also aid dogs in entering and exiting cars. For those who have large dogs and vehicles, pet ramps are another great option.
